Whittier No. 1 in final CWPA poll of season

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - The Collegiate Water Polo Association released its final poll of the 2009 season and Whittier College ended the year as the top ranked team in the country in the Division III rankings. The Poets held off Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival University of Redlands for the top spot in the land.

This is the second time in program history the Poets have finished the season ranked No. 1 in the country and first since the 2004 campaign.

WC totaled 97 points and was trailed by Redlands who garnered 96. For the second consecutive week no games were played by any Division III program yet shuffling occurred in the Top 10. Johns Hopkins moved from fourth to No. 3 to tie Claremont-M-S in the final standing while Pomona-Pitzer remained at No. 5.

The Poets ended the year with a 20-14 record, a second place finish in the SCIAC and a fourth place finish at the Western Water Polo Association Championships.

WC amassed a 16-3 record against Division III competition.

Chapman, MIT, Cal Lutheran, Occidental and Washington & Jefferson round out the Top 10.
