Rough day at the Convergence, Poets fall to Blue Jays
LA VERNE, Calif. – It was a rough start to the 2010 Claremont Convergence for the Whittier College men's water polo team as it opened up play with a pair of losses to Santa Clara, 11-5, and Top 5 Division III foe Johns Hopkins, 7-5, on Friday afternoon.
The game with the Blue Jays was highly anticipated as it pitted the No. 3 and 4 teams in the country. Joey Kienle scored the first quarter goal for the Poets but it was Johns Hopkins who led 3-1 after eight minutes.
However, it was the Blue Jays who held Whittier without a goal in the fourth quarter and held on for the two-goal win.
The Poets (6-9) opened the Convergence with the No. 12 team in the Varsity Top 20, Santa Clara. SCU opened the game with a 4-0 first quarter and used a 4-1 third to put the game away.
Whittier scored two goals in each the second and fourth quarters.
The Poets managed five different goal scorers for the game. Brandon Babot, Nihei, Schuster, Desai and Schuster all netted goals.
Evenrud made 11 saves in the loss.
The Poets will have their hands full tomorrow as they face No. 16 Concordia (Cal.) and Lindenwood.
