WHITTIER, Calif. – Junior Julian Sandoval (El Monte, Calif.) received recognition this week from the conference being named the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Athlete of the Week in the second week of voting.
Sandoval paced the Whittier College Men's Cross-Country team to a 26th place finish at the UC Riverside Invitational, notching a program-record time of 24:33 in the 8,000-meter jaunt. He finished 17th overall in the field, and was the fastest finisher of any SCIAC competitor.
His time was the fastest cross country performance by any Poet Harrier in Coach Greg Phillips' 33-year tenure at the college. The previous best was Matthew Stuart's 1999 Nationals time recorded in the 24:40 range.
Whittier begins preparations for the SCIAC Multi-Duals, set to take place Friday, September 29 at La Mirada Regional Park.
