WHITTIER, Calif. – Junior Julian Sandoval and senior Julissa Tobias are on their way to the Division III National Championships for cross-country set to take place tomorrow, Saturday, November 18 in Illinois at Principia College.
Both Sandoval and Tobias now become Whittier's 37th and 38th NCAA Championship participants since 1990.
Sandoval earns a berth into the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive year after leading the Poets to a team qualification in 2016. At the Division III West Regionals this past weekend he placed 3rd among the 124 runners who finished the 8000m course. He averaged 5:03 per mile on the sandy/rocky terrain… a course known for long deceptive inclines and sharp 70-90 degree turns. Sandoval's performance qualified as the second of seven individuals advancing to the NCAA Championships.
Tobias picked up her berth in a big way following a tough performance at the Division III West Regionals where she was under the weather coughing and sniffling with no energy and a terrible headache. But she battled to finish 5th out of 138 runners and has now qualified for the NCAA National Championships three times over her career.
The Poets begin their races tomorrow morning at 11:00am CST on the campus of Principia College in Illinois.
