Softball Snaps Losing Streak in Texas, Pacheco '10 has Six-Hit Day

Mary Pacheco '10 went 6-for-8 with two RBI and three runs scored to lead Whittier College in their sweep of Austin College in Sherman, Texas on April 3.  The Poets (17-11) won 9-1 in six innings in game one and took the nightcap by a score of 7-1.

Pacheco went 4-for-4 with two RBI, two stolen bases and a run scored in game one.  Amanda Carrasco '10 had a two-run double and scored a run.  Vicky Ovieda '09 went 3-for-3 with a run scored.  Sheryl Fukuda '08, Erica Ureno '08 and Amanda Brown '09 each drove in and scored a run.  Deena Arenas '08 (7-6) earned the win, pitching six innings and allowing just one run on two hits and two walks.

A Poet error led to the game's first run and Austin went up 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning.  The Poets tied the score in the top of the fourth, when a pass ball scored Beth Walczak '10, who doubled earlier in the inning.  In the top of the sixth, the Poets exploded for eight more runs.  An error extended the inning for the Poets, and with two outs, seven hits and a walk in succession led to the eventual 9-1 victory.

In game two, Ureno went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored.  Charis Gaston '09 also went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.  Brenna Winslow '07 went 3-for-4 with a double, one RBI and three runs scored.  Pacheco went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.  She leads the Poets with a .545, 33 RBI and 28 runs scored.  Katie Sharpe '10 and Walczak each drove in a run.  Ovieda (10-4) started on the mound and pitched five and two-thirds innings allowing just one run on four hits and five walks.

The Poets jumped out to an early lead with two doubles, two singles, a scrifice fly and three runs in the first.  They added to their lead in the third with a Gaston RBI single.  Austin scored their lone run of the game in the sixth inning.  Whittier added on three more runs in the top of the seventh to give them a 7-1 lead.  Arenas came on to pitch in the sixth inning and faced six batters, allowing just two hits.
