2007 Poets Softball Recap

The 2007 Whittier College softball team enjoyed their greatest
success in 20 years. The team finished the season with a
23-17 overall record and a 12-12 SCIAC record, good for fourth
place in the conference. The 23 wins are the third most in
program history, behind 30 wins in 1986 and 26 in 1987. The
last time a Poet softball team won 20 games was in
1990. Out of 403 teams in NCAA Division III, the Poets
were ranked in the top 50 in batting average (.337), doubles per
game (1.73) and double plays per game (.33).
Freshman Mary Pacheco led the team offensively, setting three
single-season records with a .489 batting average, 67 total hits
and 19 doubles en route to the SCIAC Rookie of the Year
Award. Pacheco was ranked 6th in the nation in
doubles per game and 16th in batting average. She
was named to the All-West Region second team. Team MVP, lone
senior Brenna Winslow, was a second team All-SCIAC honoree after
batting .417 in 2007. She was also named to the All-West
Region third team at first base. She leaves Whittier College
as the all-time leader in games played (154) and doubles
(29). Other members of the team that earned All-SCIAC honors
were freshman Amanda Carrasco, who was a first team outfielder,
junior Erica Ureno at second team third base and sophomore Vicky
Ovieda at second team outfield.
