2007 Poets Softball Recap

The 2007 Whittier College softball team enjoyed their greatest success in 20 years.  The team finished the season with a 23-17 overall record and a 12-12 SCIAC record, good for fourth place in the conference.  The 23 wins are the third most in program history, behind 30 wins in 1986 and 26 in 1987.  The last time a Poet softball team won 20 games was in 1990.   Out of 403 teams in NCAA Division III, the Poets were ranked in the top 50 in batting average (.337), doubles per game (1.73) and double plays per game (.33).

Freshman Mary Pacheco led the team offensively, setting three single-season records with a .489 batting average, 67 total hits and 19 doubles en route to the SCIAC Rookie of the Year Award.  Pacheco was ranked 6th in the nation in doubles per game and 16th in batting average.  She was named to the All-West Region second team.  Team MVP, lone senior Brenna Winslow, was a second team All-SCIAC honoree after batting .417 in 2007.  She was also named to the All-West Region third team at first base.  She leaves Whittier College as the all-time leader in games played (154) and doubles (29).  Other members of the team that earned All-SCIAC honors were freshman Amanda Carrasco, who was a first team outfielder, junior Erica Ureno at second team third base and sophomore Vicky Ovieda at second team outfield.
