Softball Opens Season With Doubleheader Split at #14 Chapman

Whittier College softball is coming off a 2007 campaign where they finished with their best record in twenty years.  They opened the 2008 season with a doubleheader split in Orange, Calif., against nationally ranked #14 Chapman University on February 2, and showed they haven't lost a step from last year.

The Poets did lose game one; a battle that into extra innings and ended with a 1-0 score. Game two was a different story, as the two teams combined for 13 runs with the final run coming off a solo blast from Amanda Carrasco '10 in the top half of the seventh to give the Poets a 7-6 victory.  The win is the first as a head coach for Poets' skipper Jennifer Bridges.

Game one was an eight-inning pitcher's duel with the game ending on an RBI single from Chapman's Amanda Campbell in the bottom of the eighth.  Senior pitcher, Deena Arenas (0-1) had a strong outing for the Poets, scattering eleven hits and walking just one batter in 7.2 innings pitched.  She got help from her defense in the bottom of the seventh with runners on second and third, when Whittier turned a rare 6-2-4-2 double play to send the game into extra innings.

Whittier's offense could only muster four hits in the game as Chapman pitcher, Jennifer Winford (1-0) kept the Poet hitters in check, striking out seven in eight innings.  2007 SCIAC Rookie of the Year, Mary Pacheco '10, had a double and Amanda Brown '09 singled and stole a base in the loss.

Both offenses erupted in the nightcap, combining for 22 hits.  Pacheco went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored.  Sheryl Fukuda '08 went 2-for-2 with an RBI, two walks and a run scored.  Brown went 2-for-4 with one RBI and a run scored and Dyan Acevedo '09 scored both times she reached base.  Carrasco also went 2-for-4 with the game-winning home run in the top of the seventh.  Heather Dady '11 (1-0) earned the win on the mound, giving up just one run on four hits and two walks.  She also struck out two batters.

The Poets had their doubleheader against Patten University cancelled due to rain on February 3.  They are back in action on February 8, when Menlo College comes to town for a 1:00pm doubleheader.
