Softball Drops a Pair to CMS

Whittier College softball looked to turn things around in SCIAC
play against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on March 22. The Athenas
showed their offensive prowess, however, scoring 22 runs in two
games on their way to 8-2 and 14-0 (five innings) victories.
In game one, Whittier posted nine hits. The Poets were led by
captain and catcher, Amanda Brown '09, who went 3-for-3 with a
double and scored a run. Also adding to Whittier's cause was Vicky
Oveida '09 who got on base twice icluding a triple, and added a run
scored and an RBI. Shortstop Dyan Acevedo ‘09 went 2-for-3,
third baseman Molly Yriate ‘11 posted a hit and an RBI, while
DH Kourney Zilbert ‘11 and first baseman Nicole Acevedo
‘09 each added a hit of their own. In the end, the Poets were
unable to capitalize, leaving eight runners on the bags.
For CMS, the solid hitting including a homerun each by Katerina
Yale and Melissa Munoz, put the Athenas on top at the end of seven
innings.
The Poets' offensive woes continued in the second game of the
doubleheader. The Athenas had two different home run sluggers,
Carlen Don and Jessica Vaughn who brought eight runs in between
them during their at-bats. The consistent offensive attack of CMS
overmatched the Poets on this particular day. The teams face off
against each other again in a month in Claremont.
Whittier drops to 3-7 in conference and 11-11 overall. Their
upcoming games include a conference double-header at home on March
29 at noon against La Verne and a make-up game the following day at
Occidental.
