Three Poets Earn SCIAC Softball Honors, Yriarte Rookie of the Year

Three Poets softball players earned All-SCIAC honors for their
performances during the 2008 season. Molly Yriarte '11 was
named SCIAC Rookie of the Year, while Vicky Ovieda '09 and Nicole
Acevedo '09 were All-SCIAC first and second team honorees,
respectively.
Yriarte became the second consecutive Rookie of the Year out of
Whittier College. Mary Pacheco earned the same award in
2007. Yriarte led the Poets this season in a number of
offensive categories: batting average (.402), hits (49), RBI (28),
total bases (71) and slugging percentage (.582). She finished
second on the team with six home runs, 21 runs scored and an
on-base percentage of .449. She was among the top five in the
conference in hits (3rd), home runs (4th) and
total bases (4th).
Ovieda earned All-SCIAC 1st team honors for the second
time. She finished the year with a .350 batting average, 41
hits, 23 RBI, 54 total bases and a team-leading 11 doubles.
She also went 5-1 on the season as a starting pitcher. She
played four positions throughout the season; pitcher, third base,
center field and left field.
Acevedo was one of the top SCIAC first basemen and third on the
Poets with a .373 batting average and a .518 slugging
percentage. She also posted a .992 fielding percentage.
The Poets completed their second consecutive 20-win season with an
overall record of 21-17. They narrowly missed a berth in the
inaugural SCIAC Tournament in fifth place with a record of 11-13.
