Three Poets Earn SCIAC Softball Honors, Yriarte Rookie of the Year

Three Poets softball players earned All-SCIAC honors for their performances during the 2008 season.  Molly Yriarte '11 was named SCIAC Rookie of the Year, while Vicky Ovieda '09 and Nicole Acevedo '09 were All-SCIAC first and second team honorees, respectively.

Yriarte became the second consecutive Rookie of the Year out of Whittier College.  Mary Pacheco earned the same award in 2007.  Yriarte led the Poets this season in a number of offensive categories: batting average (.402), hits (49), RBI (28), total bases (71) and slugging percentage (.582).  She finished second on the team with six home runs, 21 runs scored and an on-base percentage of .449.  She was among the top five in the conference in hits (3rd), home runs (4th) and total bases (4th).

Ovieda earned All-SCIAC 1st team honors for the second time.  She finished the year with a .350 batting average, 41 hits, 23 RBI, 54 total bases and a team-leading 11 doubles.  She also went 5-1 on the season as a starting pitcher.  She played four positions throughout the season; pitcher, third base, center field and left field.

Acevedo was one of the top SCIAC first basemen and third on the Poets with a .373 batting average and a .518 slugging percentage.  She also posted a .992 fielding percentage.

The Poets completed their second consecutive 20-win season with an overall record of 21-17.  They narrowly missed a berth in the inaugural SCIAC Tournament in fifth place with a record of 11-13.
