Poets use extra innings to complete sweep of Lutes

WHITTIER, Calif. - The Whittier College softball team picked up two non-conference wins on Monday afternoon over Pacific Lutheran at Palmer Field. The game was pushed to Monday from Sunday, March 23, due to rain. WC took the first game 4-1 and won the second game in eight innings, 4-3.

The Poets (15-11) trailed 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning but Amanda Carrasco singled home Nikole Gandara and four batters later Nicole Acevedo drove in the game-winning run for the purple and gold.

Carrasco finished the second game 2-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI and Jennifer Luders added two hits in the win.

WC got its first two runs of the game in the bottom of the first inning and held a lead until the seventh frame. Pacific Lutheran tacked on two runs to push the game to extra innings.

Heather Dady pitched six innings and allowed two runs (one earned) off of five hits and one walk. She struck out one batter in the no decision.

Amanda Webster (5-8) inherited two runners when she entered the game in the seventh inning. She allowed one unearned run in two innings in the win.

In the first game of the afternoon the Poets collected eight hits as Luders led the effort with a 3-for-3 performance.

Acevedo went 2-for-2 which includes a two-run homerun.

Nikle Gandara went the distance as she allowed one unearned run in seven innings. She gave up five hits and struck out five batters.

The Poets return to action on Thursday, March 26, as they host Lewis & Clark at 2 and 4 p.m.
