In the first game of the twin bill the Poets held a 2-0 lead through six innings but surrendered the tying runs in the top of the seventh to see the game extend.
Whittier had an opportunity to win the game in the home half of the eighth but left the bases loaded. The Royals scored in the next half inning and WC went down 1-2-3 in the final frame.
As a team the Poets had eight hits with four coming between Brenda Thompson and Townsend. Canida, Yriarte, Carrasco and Jennifer Luders all had one hit in the game.
