LA VERNE, Calif. – The opening round of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Post Season Tournament got underway Friday afternoon on the campus of the University of La Verne.
The Whittier College Softball team entered the SCIAC Post Season as the No. 2 seed taking on the No. 3 seeded Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer. But were unable to come away with the victory as they fell 6-5.
Pomona-Pitzer got on top quickly with two runs over the first two innings. But that lead soon evaporated as Whittier would storm back adding a run in each of the next three innings to go on top 3-2. Alli Fonseca (Pico Rivera, Calif.) doubled in Brittany Attaway (Claremont, Calif.) in the 2nd. Jade Sanchez (Whittier, Calif.) came up big in the 3rd with a base knock up the middle scoring Kacey Whitney (Cypress, Calif.) and Hayley Wishner (Chino, Calif.) would capitalize on a wild pitch in the 4th putting WC up one.
PP deadlocked the game in the top half of the 5th but again the Poets were able to respond this time with Kaitlyn Garza (Chino, Calif.) laying down a sacrifice bunt that scored Attaway followed by Fonseca coming around to score on a passed ball.
Whittier held that slight lead at 5-3 going into the 6th. But again the lead wouldn't hold as a double from Campion and a two-run blast by Rodarte would swing the momentum putting the Sagehens back on top 6-5.
The Poets looked to tie things up in the bottom half of the frame with Whitney singling to right and then moving into scoring position with a stolen base. But she would get left stranded with two strikeouts and a lineout.
Amanda Melodia (Placentia, Calif.) who came in relief of Sam Casanas (La Habra, Calif.) was charged with the loss. She went the final 1.1 innings giving up a run on a hit, which was the go-ahead two-run blast.
Whitney was a perfect 3-3 on the game with a run scored. Attaway was 1-3 with two runs scored and a walk and Wishner was 1-3 scoring once.
Whittier now takes on the top seeded Leopards of the University of La Verne who were shutout by Claremont-M-S 2-0 in the other semi-final, tomorrow, Saturday, May 5 beginning at 11:00am.
