Shelley Whitaker begins her first season in 2010 as the head coach of the Whittier College softball team and brings nine seasons worth collegiate coaching experience to the position. Whitaker was hired in October and also serves as the Senior Women's Administrator.
Prior to coming to Whittier, Whitaker was the head coach at MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Ill. In her four seasons with the Highlanders she saw 18 student-athletes earn NFCA Academic All-American honors and 21 players garner a spot on the All-St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Academic team.
In her final season she placed three on the all-conference team and had two players named to the NCAA Division III All-Midwest Region team.
A 1995 graduate of the University of Rio Grande (Ohio), Whitaker began her collegiate coaching career as an assistant at Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio. Her teams made two appearances to the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament and earned a berth to the NCAA Division III World Series in 1998.
The Fighting Muskies finished fourth in the nation in '98 and were ranked in the Top 20 during the 1999 campaign where they held the longest win streak in the country at 33 games.
Whitaker got her first head coaching position at LaGrange College and in her third season helped implement the transition from NAIA Division I to NCAA Division III. Her team's totaled 13 Academic All-Americans and four All-Americans.
As a player at Rio Grande she was named to the All-NAIA District 22 first-team and to the All-Mid Ohio all-conference squad at catcher. Whitaker was twice named to the Academic All-American teams, was an all-conference scholar-athlete and held a career batting average of over .400.
In addition to her duties as the head coach at MacMurray, Whitaker also spent time as the head women's golf coach, head volleyball coach, Assistant Athletic Director, Senior Women's Administrator and Sports Information Director.
Whitaker was a double major and received her Bachelor's in Physical Education and Sports & Exercise Studies with a double minor in Health and Business Management. In 2000 she earned her Master's of Education from Muskingum with a concentration in Secondary Education.
She currently resides in Long Beach, Calif.
