Men's and Women's Swimming Pick Up First Wins, Sanchez '08 Improves NCAA Qualifying Time


Manuel Sanchez '08 won the 100-yard breaststroke in 57.78 seconds, improving his NCAA 'B' Cut time and the Whittier College men's swimming team won their first meet of the season 122-72 over the California Institute of Technology at Slade Aquatics Center on February 3.  The Whittier women earned their first win of the season as well, beating Caltech 140-86.

Sanchez was also a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay team with Sam Benedum '09, Sean Larsen '10 and Chris Villanueva '09 who won the event in 1:34.75.  Benedum won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.91 seconds and the 100-yard freestyle in 49.60 seconds.  Matt Rogers '08 finished first in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:52.90.  Lance Haver '10 took the 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.09 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:54.15.  Matt Brammer '09 won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.8.

On the women's side, the 200-yard medley relay team of Indre Lauraitis '10, Kera Kimura '10, Catherine Gouge '08 and Nicole Sandoval '08 won the event in 2:03.10.  Kimura also won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:22.91 and the 100-yard backstroke in 1:12.50.  Sandoval won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:12.19 and was a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay team that won with a time of 1:52.12.  the other members of the relay team were Ashley Papenbrock '08, Alex Gorman '10 and Gouge.  Gouge also finished first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 57.66.  Lauraitis took first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:07.97.  Jaclyn Grabowski '09 took the top spot in the 50-yard freestyle in 28.81 seconds.  Caroline Galvin '08 won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:16.03. Cheryl Bucholtz '07 won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:01.78.
