Sanchez Breaks Whittier College Record at Occidental

Manny Sanchez '08 broke a Whittier College record in the 400-yard individual medley when the Poets traveled to Occidental College on February 2.  Sanchez shattered the previous mark by over five seconds with a time of 4:19.18.

Sam Benedum '09 won his race in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.65 seconds.  Sanchez and Benedum teamed up with Will Jackson '11 and Chris Villanueva '09 to finish second in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:26.8. 

On the women's side, London Blake '11 won the 1,000-yard freestyle by 27 seconds with a time of 12:03.54.  She also took first in the 500 freestyle, with a time of 5:56.05.  Catherine Gouge '08 won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:44.18 and finished second in the 400 individual medley in 5:22.02.  Nicole Sandoval '08, Indre Lauraitis '10, Ashley Papenbrock '08 and Sara Wolff ‘11finished second in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 4:11.02.

The Poets go to Pasadena, Calif., on February 9 to face Caltech.  The final meet of the regular season starts at 11:00 am.  The SCIAC championships start on February 21 at the Cerritos Aquatics Center.
