Track & Field Athletes Reach Personal Best Times at Pomona Invite


The Whittier College Track and Field teams took part in the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational in Claremont, Calif. on April 7.  The event featured some of the best track and field competitors in the country at both the collegiate and national level.  In the latest NCAA Division III polls, the Whittier College men were ranked 25th, while the women came in at 29th.

On the men's side, Matt Gocke '09 set personal best times in the 200-meter dash (24.51) while winning his heat race and in the 400-meter dash (53.37).  He finished 49th and 39th in the events, respectively.  Nicolas Salomone '07 reached a personal best in the 1500-meter run (4:06.21) and finished 22nd.  Chris Gartrell '08 finished 13th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.64 and took 26th in the 100-meter dash in 11.64 seconds.  John Morley '07 finished 38th in the 800-meter run in 1:59.48.

The women saw a personal best time from Erin Patterson '10 in the 800-meter run (2:24.79) as she won her heat race.  Dana Allen '07 finished seventh in the high jump with a mark of 1.5 meters.  Shuree Gangloff '07 finished 11thin the discus throw with a mark of 40.38 meters and took 12th in the hammer throw with a 38.42 meters mark.  In the 400-meter dash, Monique Melgarejo '10 came in 29th with a time of 65.77 seconds.  She also finished 46th in the 200-meter dash in 29.71 seconds.
