Track & Field Teams Finish 7th at SCIAC Championships


Seven Whittier College athletes earned all-conference honors as the Whittier College men and women each placed seventh at the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Whittier College on April 28 and 30.  Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges won the men's and women's titles.  The top six athletes in each event earn All-SCIAC honors.

Chris Gartrell '08 finished second in the 100 and 200 meter dash events.  After finishing with the top time in the 100 prelims (11.01), he finished second in the finals with a time of 11.03 seconds.  In the 200, Gartrell's time of 22.24 seconds was just .01 behind the winning time. 

John Morley '07 finished sixth in the 1500 meter run with a lifetime best of 4:02.99.  The 4 x 400 meter relay team of Gartrell, Morley, Nicholas Salomone '07 and Matt Gocke '10 took sixth place with a time of 3:30.04; a season best by over four seconds. Others members of the men's team that performed well were Ryan Munoz '09 in the 100 (11.78), Eric Shane '07 with a throw of 163" 00" in the Javelin, Gocke with a 53.04 in the 400 meter dash, TC Collymore '10 with a 20' 5.25" mark in the Long Jump, and Raphael Rodriguez '10 with a personal best time of 10:00.28 in the 3000 meter steeplechase.

The women were led by an outstanding effort by Dana Allen '07, who set a school record and first place time of 15.01 seconds in the 100 meter hurdles.  She also took third in the high jump with a personal best mark of 5' 1".  She also ran in both the 4 x 100 and the 4 x 400 relay teams that placed fifth and sixth, respectively.  Stephanie Warner '09 finished in third place in the javelin with a throw of 109' 10".  Shuree Gangloff '09 placed fourth in the Shotput (36' 4.25") and sixth in the hammer throw (122' 3"). Molly Loesche '07 vaulted to a season best of 9' 0" in the Pole Vault. Darlene Partida '10 fought through a hip injury to finish sixth in the 1500 meter run (4:56.74). The other relay runners who joined Allen in both relays were Erin Patterson '10, Monigue Melgajero '10, and Michelle Araw '07. The relay times were both season bests with the 4x100 improving by over one second to run 53.36 and the 4x400 cutting twenty-eight seconds off their previous best, and setting a new school record, with a time of 4:16.95.
