Track & Field Teams Each Finish Sixth at SCIAC Invitational
Two newcomers led both the men's and women's track teams to a
sixth place finish at the SCIAC Invitational meet held at
Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on March 1. Devin Farrow ‘10
took second place in both the discus (now # 5 on Whittier all-time
list at 142' 11") and shot put for 16 of the men's 47 total
points. Kashima Patridge ‘11 was a busy athlete as she
competed in five individual events and finished with 18.5 points
placing in four events.
On the men's side, the Poets scored points in 11 events with TC
Collymore ‘10 leading the team by placing in 4
events and garnering 12 points for the team. He came through with a
third place in the high jump, fourth in the triple jump, fifth in
the javelin and ran in the fifth place 4x00m relay. Others who did
well were Chris Gartrell ‘08 in the 100m (3rd), the 4x100m
(5th) and 4x400m (6th) relays, Matt Gocke ‘10 in the 400m
(4th) and the 4x400m relay, Thomas Martinez ‘11 in the 1500m
(6th) & 4x400m relay and Brad Seitz ‘11 in the javelin
(4th). Others running in the 4x100m relay were James Oliver
‘11 and Jonathon Brasfield '11. While not placing,
others who performed well included David Vargas '11, who improved
in the hammer going from 72' 0" to 118' 0", Luis Molina
‘11 in the 100m, Bryce Holewinski ‘11 in the 1500m.
Kashima took second in the long jump, third in the high jump,
fourth in the triple jump (3rd on Whittier's all-time list at 33'
8") and sixth in the 100m. She also became #6 on the all-time list
in the 100m hurdles at 17.42. The women's team received solid
support from several athletes also scoring in 11 events.
Shuree Gangloff ‘'09 won her specialty in the discus and took
sixth in the hammer. Sheila Enos ‘11 backed up Gangloff with
a thirrd place finish in the discus. Erin Patterson ‘10 ran a
solid race for fourth in the 400m. Darlene Partida ‘10 (2nd)
and Julia Tyack ‘08 (6th) both scored in the 1500m. The
4x400m and distance medley relay teams both took fifth place
finishes. The 4x400m relay team included Patterson, Jessica Mena
‘11, Meghan Reynolds ‘11, and Adriana Durflinger
‘09. The distance medley relay team included Jessica Medina
‘11, Partida, Meghan Reynolds ‘11, and Tyack.
The Poets' next meet will be the Peace Invitational at SOKA
University on March 8.
