Track and Field Continues to Improve at Point Loma Invitational

Whittier College track and field traveled to Point Loma University for a non-scoring meet on March 22.  The Poets got strong performances from a number of athletes that will be traveling to the CA/NV Championships on March 28 and 29.

The women's team was led by the trio of Rosario Rios-Aquilar ‘08, Kashima Patridge ‘11, and Shuree Gangloff ‘09. Rios-Aguilar is fast becoming a very important athlete on the team and proved herself by joining the Whittier College all-time top-ten list in four events. She placed second in the high jump, going 5' 1", seventh in the 200-meter dash with a 27.59, and fifth in the 400-meter dash with a 61.98.  She then teamed up with Ashley Vierra ‘10, Stephanie Anderson ‘11, and Patridge in the 4x100 relay that ran the third best all-time with a 52.45. Partridge placed third in the long jump with a mark of 16' 4.25", and triple jump at 33' .5".  She took sixth in the javelin with a throw of 100' 4". Gangloff won the shot put and discus with marks of 37' 4.5" and 136' 2", respectively.  She placed seventh in the javelin at 94' 0". Others doing well include Anderson in the 100 with a 14.29 and long jump at 14' 8.5", Erin Patterson ‘10 in the 800 with a 2:29.01, and both Sheila Enos ‘11 and Essence Scott ‘11 in the discus at 115' 9" in fourth place and 94' 5" in ninth place, respectively.  In the shot put, Scott finished third with a 32 6.5" and Enos took fifth place with a 32' 1.5".

The men were led by Chris Gartrell ‘08, TC Collymore ‘10, and Devin Farrow ‘10.  Gartrell placed third in both the 100-meter dash (11.33) and 200-meter dash (22.44), while Collymore placed second in the high jump (6' 2.75") and long jump (20' 2.25").  Farrow placed third in shot put with a 46' 8.75" throw and fifth in discus with a 137' 7" throw. Others doing well included Brad Seitz ‘11 with a fifth place finish in the javelin at 159' 10", Brandon Wilcox ‘11 with a sixth place finish in shot put at 43' 2.25", and Matt Carroll ‘09 placed seventh in discus at 111' 0".

The next meet will be the CA/NV Championships held at Fresno State University where a select group will be competing against many NCAA DI and DII programs along with many of the top athletes from NCAA DIII and NAIA colleges. Those team members competing will be, Chris Gartrell, TC Collymore, and Devin Farrow for the men and Kashima Patridge and Shuree Gangloff for the women.
