Women's Basketball Upset by Caltech, Mascoto '07 Puts Up 10 Points, 11 Rebounds


Michelle Mascoto '07 picked up her sixth double-double of the season with ten points and eleven rebounds, but Whittier College lost 54-52 to the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, Calf. on February 10.  The Poets are now 10-11 overall and 3-7 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Six of Mascoto's eleven rebounds came on the offensive end.  She also added four steals.  Desiree Flores '08 was the only other Poet in double figures with 14 points and added five rebounds.  Megan Wingo '07 scored eight points and pulled down nine rebounds.  

The Poets hit five three-pointers in the first half on their way to a 31-20 lead at intermission.  In the second half, Whittier struggled from the field, shooting just 22 percent from the field and converting on just one of twelve three-point attempts.  Caltech (3-18, 2-8) outscored the Poets 34-21 in the second half to steal the victory despite being out rebounded 51-40 and committing 22 turnovers.
