Two Freshman Double-Doubles Not Enough in Season Opening Loss


 

Two Poet freshmen recorded double-doubles in their Whittier College debut, but the Poets lost 55-50 to the Coast Guard Academy in the Graham Athletics Center on November 16. 

Essence Scott '11 scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.  Seven of her rebounds came on the offensive end.  Kourtney Zilbert '11 finished with eleven points and a game-high 14 boards.  Rosario Rios-Aguilar '08 scored eight points and had five rebounds.  Morgan Sabala '11 led the defense with four steals.

Neither team shot well from the field.  Coast Guard shot 32% while the Poets shot 31%.  The teams combined for 48 turnovers, including 28 for the Poets. Coast Guard held a 25-20 edge at halftime.

Coast Guard was led by Melissa Martinelli who scored a game-high 20 points on 8-of-9 shooting.  Jennifer Tamminen scored sixteen points and Natalie Moyer was a rebound shy of a double-double with eleven points and nine boards.

The Poets are at home for their next game on November 26 when they take on La Sierra University.  Tip-off at the Graham Athletics Center is scheduled for 7:30pm.
