Women's Basketball Continues Bid for a SCIAC Tourney Birth With Win Over CMS


Whittier College traveled to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and avenged a previous loss to the Athenas with a 75-49 victory on February 9.  The Poets are now 10-11 overall and 5-5 in SCIAC play.

Christa Rainville '08 led the Poets in the scoring column with a game-high 13 points.  She chipped in on defense with two blocks and a steal.  Rosario Rios-Aguilar '08 scored eleven points and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.  She was also credited with two assists and a steal.  Morgan Sabala '11 hit three shots from long range and finished with eleven points.  She also had three assists and three steals.  Kourtney Zilbert '11 finished with ten points.

Claremont (2-18, 1-9) was led by Camille Sheffield with nine points.  Cori Williams and Sasha Goldkorn each had eight points.

The Poets came out of the gate on fire.  They shot nearly 55% from the field and 57% from beyond the arc in the first half as they built an eleven-point lead at the break.  They shot a season-high 50.9% from the field in the game.  Whittier continued to build their lead in the second half, going up by 20 points at the 13:38 mark.  The Athenas didn't get closer than 15 points for the remainder of the game. 

Whittier dominated the game in every respect.  They out rebounded Claremont 37-27 and won the turnover battle 25-19.  The Poets scored 24 points off turnovers. The Whittier defense held the Athenas to 38.6% shooting in the game. 

The Poets are at home for their next game, a face-off with second place University of La Verne on February 14.  The SCIAC showdown is scheduled to begin at 7:30 pm.
