WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College women's basketball team saw freshman Priscilla Rodriguez (East Los Angeles, Calif.) once again lead the offensive unit Saturday night finishing with a team high 25 points off the bench but a season high 28 turnovers proved costly in a 73-59 loss to Cal Lutheran University.
Whittier kept the game close in the first 13 minutes of action trailing by just two 20-18 at the 7:32 mark. But an ensuing CLU 11-2 run over the next four minutes pushed the Regal lead to 31-20. Whittier was able to close out the half on a 9-4 run capped off with a three-point play the old fashion way from freshman Erica Houston (Stockton, Calif.) but they still trailed 36-29 at the break.
Whittier would cut the Regal lead to six 38-32 after opening up the half with a layin from Ashley Genie (Whittier, Calif.) and a free throw from Nicole Ruffino (Las Vegas, NV) but Chelsea Jacoby would add 15 of the next 19 points for Cal Lutheran to help them increase their lead to 57-49 with 6:54 to go.
During the second half, Rodriguez tallied 11 points in a row for the Poets over a two minute stretch but it wouldn't be enough as the Regals would convert five free throws in the final minute to secure the victory.
Along with Rodriguez was Danielle Hays (San Diego, Calif.) who posted 11 points on 4-7 shooting and Ruffino who finished with seven points and six boards.
For Cal Lutheran, Jacoby had a game high 28 points with five steals and six rebounds. She was joined by Jessica Salottolo who had 21 points off the bench.
Whittier returns to the court next Thursday, January 30 when they host UC Santa Cruz beginning at 7:00pm in their final non-conference bout of the season.
