Poets can’t weather the storm in 83-42 loss to UC Santa Cruz

WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College women's basketball team wrapped up their non-conference schedule Thursday evening as they fell 83-42 to the Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz to drop to 1-17, 1-8 SCIAC.

The previous time these two teams met, UCSC was the victor earning an 89-60 victory at home back on November 16.

With the addition of junior transfer Tiffany Thompson (Oakland, Calif.) the Poets were still unable to matchup with the size of the Banana Slugs being outrebounded 56-40 on the night. 

Senior forward Danielle Hays (San Diego, Calif.) was the lone Poet in double figures finishing with 12 points on 3-9 shooting to go with eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals. 

Whittier trailed 39-17 at the half after being held to just four points in the first 11 minutes of play.  In the second they managed to tally 25 points but was unable to limit the offensive attack of the Banana Slugs who added 44 points, while shooting 46%.

Hays was joined by Priscilla Rodriguez (Los Angeles, Calif.) who chipped in with seven points off the bench, while Dannika Navales-Lugtu (San Francisco, Calif.) had five.

UCSC was led by Leah Parrish who collected a game high 21 points and nine rebounds to go with three assists and a steal.  She was the only Banana Slug in double figures but saw Trina Torres, Taylor Willis and Sara Crane collect nine and eight points, each respectively.    

Whittier returns to SCIAC play tomorrow, Saturday, February 1 when they travel to Claremont, Calif. to take on the Athena's from CMS beginning at 7:00pm.
