LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Basketball team got their 2016-17 season underway Saturday afternoon as they took on Linfield College during the Occidental College Tournament.
Whittier battled for all 32:00 minutes and kept the Wildcats on their heels but couldn't hold on for the victory as they fell 66-62.
Linfield held a slight 13-12 advantage following the first quarter of play. Seven of Whittier's points came from senior Ana Youngblood (Berkeley, Calif.) who was 3-4 from the field as WC shot 42% from the field. In the second, the Poets continued firing on all cylinders outscoring Linfield 20-15 that gave them a 32-28 halftime lead. This time the Purple & Gold were 8-14 from the field, spreading the scoring and shooting 57% as Emily Underwood (Nicholasville, KY) added five of her nine points in the period.
Out of the half, Linfield found their groove cutting into the deficit outscoring Whittier 18-16 in the third quarter, while getting help from Paige Graham who totaled 12 points. Then in the fourth, they continued with their momentum adding 20 points in the final stanza, which proved enough to pull off the come from behind victory.
Both Emilee Dy (Chino Hills, Calif.) and Youngblood registered 14 points apiece for the game, while Dy had a game high three steals. Daniza Rodriguez (San Jose, Calif.) off the bench added eight points going 3-6 from the field, while freshman Cali Cubel (Oceanside, Calif.) chipped in with five to go with four boards and two assists.
Whittier wraps up the tournament today, Sunday, November 20 as they take on the Rochester Institute of Technology beginning at 3:00pm.
