CHINO HILLS, Calif. – Sophomore Kajal Vitha (Whittier, Calif.) put together her two best rounds of her collegiate career donning the Purple & Gold over the weekend winning the individual title at the CMS Invite, while leading the Whittier College Women's Golf team to a 2nd Place finish.
Whittier looked poise for an upset run trailing No. 14 Claremont-M-S by two strokes going into the final day but couldn't make up the gap as they went 310-312 for a 622. This placed them 2nd overall for the tournament finishing ahead of Pomona-Pitzer (638), Chapman (675), UC Santa Cruz (768), and La Verne.
Vitha shot a 75 on the first day to lead the Purple & Gold and then followed that up with a second round 75, finishing atop the leaderboard going +6.
The top five were all close together with movement occurring all within a couple shots of each other. Junior Shelby Hunt (Damascus, OR) and freshman Taylor Beckwith (Turlock, Calif.) finished tied for 5th both going +10. Hunt went 78-76 and Beckwith was 76-78.
Within the Top 6, there were seven Poets and Athenas who finished among the top, four coming from CMS and three from WC.
Sophomore Madison Crimi-Demichele (San Jose, Calif.) was Whittier's fourth finisher and came back strong following a tough CA State Intercollegiate to go 83-83. She totaled a 166 over two days and was +22, which placed her 16th.
Junior Ciara Clark (Henderson, NV) wasn't far off the pace finishing 18th. She had her best round of an 81 that helped keep Whittier in striking distance but dropped six spots after an 87 on day two.
Whittier wraps up their non-traditional season this week and will return to competition at the beginning of February when they take part in the PLNU Reach 2017 in San Diego, Calif. on the 6-7 at Riverwalk Golf Club.
