NORTH PRESCOTT, AZ – The Whittier College Women's Golf Team fell unfortunate earlier this week finishing fourth at the ERAU Co-ED Invitational in North Prescott, AZ.
A grueling first day of 36 holes and harsh conditions made Antelope Hills Golf Club a little tougher on the golfers; no one in the field was under par after the first 18 holes played on Monday. Conditions lightened up and made for lower scores but the grind of another 18 holes proved to be too daunting for others as the Poets posted rounds of 307-330-319 (956).
Biola University won the team title with a 910 (306-301-303) and was followed by Embry-Riddle (AZ) with a 927 (305-310-312) and Claremont-M-S with a 955 (326-317-312) who came back to edge the Purple & Gold on the last day for third place by a stroke.
Junior Taylor Beckwith (Turlock, Calif.) sat in a great position after the opening round leading the field after shooting an even 72 but couldn't maintain it as she would drop back four spots into 5th at the conclusion of both days after a 78-82.
Senior Kajal Vitha (Whittier, Calif.) who has been the Poets top performer this Fall opened with a 76 and despite an 83 in the afternoon round was able to bounce back with a closing 79 placing her 12th overall.
Sophomore Kamryn Marie Garcia (Fullerton, Calif.) was tied with Vitha after round one shooting a 76 but she too had a tough second round of 85 before wrapping up the invite with a 79 moving her into 14th.
The final two scorers for the Poets included senior Madison Crimi-Demichele (San Jose, Calif.) and freshman Natalie Gonzalez (Norwalk, Calif.). Crimi-Demichele posted an 83-84 on day one before coming up with a 79 to finish in a tie for 17th. Gonzalez went 85-85 over her first two rounds before dropping three strokes on day two action with an 82 placing her 25th.
Whittier has now wrapped up their Fall season and will begin their Spring season on February 16-17 when they open up with SCIAC No. 1 at Los Serranos Golf Club.
