Poets score season-high 20 goals in win over Linfield
MCMINNVILLE, Ore. - The Whittier College women's lacrosse team never trailed on Monday evening as they rolled past Linfield for the second time in 10 days, 20-12, to earn the team's third straight victory and second of its spring break trip.
The Poets (5-5) opened the game on an 8-0 run and led 12-7 at the intermission.
Sherise Varga scored the game's first goal just 1:30 into the contest and Lauren Bibby scored two goals within 20 seconds of each other to put WC up 3-0 at 26:01.
WC scored its next five goals over a 10 minute span to lead 8-0 at the 11:43 mark of the first half.
Linfield (2-6) pulled within four goals early in the second half but the purple and gold used a second half run to put the game out of reach for the Wildcats. The Poets scored five straight goals to take a 17-8 lead with just over 13 minutes left in the game.
WC had six different goal scorers as Varga and Trillium Santin finished with a game-high five goals. Bibby tallied five points with three goals and two assits.
Jessica Farrell started in goal for the Poets and made eight saves.
The 20 goals scored by the Poets are the most this season. The team's previous high was 16 which was accomplished twice this year.
WC returns to action tomorrow, March 31, as they face Pacific (Ore.) in its final spring break game. The game is set for a 5 p.m. start.
