Garcia scores six goals in loss to Puget Sound
WHITTIER, Calif. - Ana Garcia scored six goals for the Whittier College women's lacrosse team but it wasn't enough as the Poets lost to University of Puget Sound on Sunday morning, 14-13, at Memorial Stadium.
WC (2-5) trailed 14-9 with 11 minutes left in the game and cut the deficit to one-goal at 14-13 with 58 seconds left but that was close as they would get.
Garcia's last second shot was saved by Puget Sound's Ana Calciano to help the Loggers (3-0) earn the win. The Poets had 14 seconds to clear the ball and get the game tying goal but Calciano stopped Whittier's effort.
Calciano finished with 21 saves.
The Poets held the advantage in shots (41-35 and ground balls (25-24) but only managed to convert 3-for-11 free-position shots. Puget Sound went 4-of-8 on FPS.
Emily Mukai had three goals for the Poets while Lauren Bibby added a goal and an assist.
Conny Joel made 12 saves in the loss.
Whittier forced 11 turnovers by Puget Sound as Garcia caused four turnovers and had a game-high six ground balls.
Whittier returns to action on Friday, March 20, as they host Linfield at 7 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
