TACOMA, WA – The Whittier College women's lacrosse team opened up their spring break trip up North with a 22-11 victory over the Loggers of Puget Sound Tuesday evening.
Whittier now improves to 3-7, 0-4 SCIAC, while Puget Sound drops to 1-8.
This marks the second time this season Whittier has beaten Puget Sound and by the same score as they beat the Loggers back on March 12 by the score of 22-11.
Puget Sound opened the scoring with back to back goals in the first five minutes of play but saw Whittier go on a 4-0 run from four different players (Drew Kuperman, Carolyn Mukai, Raquel Damti) capped off by a Lily Baxter goal who was found cutting to the goal from Tiffany Reyes.
This gave Whittier their first lead of the contest and a lead they would maintain throughout the game. Katherine Havlik of Puget Sound brought the Loggers within one at 4-3 but they again saw a 7-0 run put on by the Poets who continued to find the back of the goal.
During this run Baxter added three goals bringing her total to four for the game helping Whittier extend their lead to 11-3. But Baxter wasn't done there as she tacked on two more goals to close out the period in the final ten minutes of play to bring her first half goal total to six and the Whittier lead to 13-5.
Coming out of the break the Loggers made a valiant effort to come back scoring three of the first four goals of the second half but couldn't stop the offensive attack of the Poets as they again went on a 4-0 run behind goals from Dana Barraco, Baxter, Mukai, and Brooke Winslow.
After a man up goal from Reid that stopped the Poet run at the 14:41 mark, Whittier added four of the last six goals of the second half to secure the ten goal win thanks to back to back goals from Kuperman and Hallie Doane.
Between the pipes freshman Nicole Yorba played all 60 minutes and recorded eight saves achieving her third win this season.
Whittier was led on offense by Baxter who finished with seven goals on nine shots, one assist, and three ground balls, while Mukai finished with six goals, two assists, and 11 draw controls.
Up next for Whittier brings Linfield in the second game of the spring break occurring this Thursday, March 29 beginning at 5:00pm.
