WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College women's lacrosse team opened up their 2013 campaign Saturday evening but ran into the nationally ranked Bulldogs of the University of Redlands who came into the contest ranked No. 19 according to LaxMagazine.com.
In what seems like an odd way to start a season with Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Play right from the get go, Whittier saw it as a way to get their feet wet as Head Coach Staci Williams welcomed in eight new players, five of which started.
The Poets jumped out of the gates quickly adding the first goal of the game from Lily Baxter. But this lead would soon be short-lived as Redlands would go on an 8-1 run sparked Jacky Craycraft who added three goals during the run.
At the 15:18 mark in the first half, Baxter again would answer capitalizing off of a free position shot pulling the Poets within six, but that's as close as they would get as Redlands would go on a 4-1 run to close out the half. With just a few seconds left on the clock in the first, Whittier's Shaina Denny capitalized off of a free position sending the score into intermission 12-3.
Coming out of the break, the Purple & Gold answered quickly getting back to back goals from senior captain Carolyn Mukai and Denny who capitalized off of her second free position shot. In a low scoring second half, Redlands managed to outscore the Poets 5-4 thanks to a 4-0 run that spanned a five minute period. Whittier added two goals late in the half at the 6:50 mark from Denny and then with 12 seconds to play from Baxter who connected on her second free position shot of the game, but this would be the last offensive spurt they would receive as Redlands went on to tally a last second goal with time running out from Shannon Sunnergren en route to the 17-7 victory.
Mukai led the Poets with a goal on seven shots, while grabbing six groundballs, three draw controls, and three caused turnovers. Baxter and Denny had three goals apiece and combined for nine shots, two groundballs, and four draw controls.
For the Bulldogs KK McCaslin led all scorers totaling a game high six goals on eight shots, while Craycraft and Stephanie Garrett totaled three goals apiece.
Whittier returns to action when they hit the road and travel into Los Angeles, Calif. for a contest against the Tigers of Occidental College who come into 2013 nationally ranked No. 20 according to Lacrosse Magazine. The game is set to take place on Wednesday, February 13 beginning at 7:00pm.
