CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College women's lacrosse team dropped their straight contest Saturday morning as they fell 20-13 to the Athena's of Claremont-M-S despite a 6-2 second half run.
Whittier now drops to 0-3, 0-3 SCIAC, while Claremont-M-S improves to 2-1, 2-1 SCIAC.
The Athena's opened up the contest on a 5-0 run before Lily Baxter found the back of the goal being fed by Carolyn Mukai. Five minutes later Whittier would again find the back of the goal thanks to Baxter who capitalized off of a free position and then with 7:56 to play in the first half, Tully Tampakes tallied her first collegiate goal off of a free position shot that sent the score into the half 11-3.
Opening up the second half, CMS' Anthea Weixel came down off of the draw control and moved the score to 12-3 before the Purple & Gold responded with a 5-0 run getting goals from Mukai, Baxter, Rebekah Delledera, and Tiffany Reyes that pulled the Poets within four at 12-8.
After the Athena's tallied another three goals Whittier again responded with three of their own coming from Shaina Denny, Daniella Delledera, and Baxter. But with time running out, CMS would close out the frame on a 7-2 run stopping the Poet offense in its tracks. The final two Whittier goals came from D. Delledera and Denny.
For the game Whittier controlled the groundballs (12-5) and draw controls (21-13) and were deadlocked with the Athena's on shots (30-30) but were unable to stop the high powered CMS offense down the stretch. Mukai led the Poets with two goals on six shots, while collecting two groundballs, seven draw controls, and one caused turnover. Baxter finished with four goals on 10 shots, while totaling nine draw controls.
Whittier returns to the field next week on Wednesday, February 20 when they host the Panthers of Chapman University beginning at 7:00pm.
