WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College women's lacrosse team continues to seek their first victory of the 2012-13 season after falling 18-8 Wednesday evening to Chapman University after putting together a strong first half.
Whittier saw themselves down just a goal 7-6 at halftime after they put together a 4-1 run to close out the frame sparked by two goals from Lily Baxter. Carolyn Mukai also found the back of the goal capitalizing off of a man up situation and Shaina Denny was found by Baxter for her second goal of the contest.
The first half proved to be a fight till the very end and was the Poets best half this season thus far. But coming out in the second, Chapman found their offensive spark opening up the half on a 7-0 spurt getting three goals from Allie Kontny. Whittier stopped the bleeding with 10:16 to play when Denny slipped one past Panther keeper Anjali Thota to pull the Purple & Gold within seven. But again Chapman wound up closing out the game on a 4-1 run negating any Poet comeback despite Denny adding her fourth goal of the contest with 2:25 to play.
Denny finished with four goals on six shots, while collecting three ground balls and Baxter finished with two goals on seven shots to go with three groundballs and four draw controls.
Nicole Yorba received the loss in between the pipes as she finished with 11 saves on 29 shots.
Despite Chapman holding the advantage in two of the five statistical categories, Whittier found themselves going 4-7 on free positions, 6-9 on clear attempts, while grabbing 22 groundballs.
The Poets return to action this Saturday, February 23 when they travel to Claremont, Calif. to take on Pomona-Pitzer with game time set for 1:00pm.
