Poets open non-conference play with 17-11 loss to Augustana (IL)

WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College women's lacrosse team opened up non-conference play against Augustana College (IL) Monday evening but came away empty as they fell 17-11 dropping their record to 0-6.
In a match-up between two programs who were seeking their first victory of 2013, the Vikings of Augustana College used a 10-3 second half run to run away with the win after they only led 8-7 at the half.
Sophomore Lily Baxter opened up the scoring with an unassisted goal five minutes in but saw Augustana answer with a 4-0 run sparked by Emily Handrahan who totaled three in a row. This gave the Vikings a 4-1 lead until Whittier mounted their comeback adding their own scoring spurt getting three unassisted goals from Meesha Robinson and Shaina Denny that pulled the Purple & Gold even at 4-4.
After Augustana grabbed their second lead going up by three once again, the Poets found their offense once again at the 5:16 mark finishing the first half on a 3-1 run with goals coming from Drew Kuperman, Baxter, and Robinson.
Coming out of the break and only trailing by one 8-7, Robinson got things started for the Poets off the draw control finding the back of the goal two minutes in that brought the score even for the second time. But the Vikings would bounce back to add two 5-0 runs that put the game out of reach despite Whittier getting goals at the 13:07 and 44 second marks from Carolyn Mukai and Baxter.
The Vikings outshot the Poets on the game 32-22 and was 16-19 on clear attempts but the Poets held the advantage on groundballs (21-14) and was even on saves (10).
Robinson led the Poets on the evening finishing with three goals on five shots, while picking up three groundballs and forcing a turnover. Despite finishing with just one goal, Mukai totaled three groundballs, five draw controls, and two caused turnovers.
Whittier returns to action with another non-conference match-up against Berry University on Tuesday, March 5 with game time set for 6:00pm.
