CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College women's lacrosse team got their 2014 season underway Saturday with a conference match-up against Pomona-Pitzer.
Using an early 7-0 run, the Sagehens cruised to the 14-4 victory led by Rebecca Long who finished with a hat trick.
Head Coach Trish Bonagura who is in her first season with the Purple & Gold along with assistant Staci Passafiume saw three freshman get their first starts of their collegiate careers.
Senior Shaina Denny (Seal Beach, Calif.) broke the early drought at the 9:48 mark in the first half capitalizing on a free position but PP would add another two to head into the break up 9-2. The second goal for the Poets came from Rebekah Delledera (Livermore, Calif.), which was also on a free position.
Opening up the second, Pomona-Pitzer would add the first five goals to extend their lead to 14-2 until Whittier would add the final two tallies of the game from freshman Amy Buck (Beaverton, OR) and Lily Baxter (Phoenix, AZ).
Junior Nicole Yorba (Poway, Calif.) despite surrendering 14 goals on 26 shots picked up 10 saves between the posts. Baxter led the offense with five shots, while Hansen collected four draw controls, a groundball, and two shots with both being on goal
The Poets return to action on Wednesday night, February 12 for their home opener against Chapman University beginning at 7:00pm.
