ORANGE, Calif. – The Whittier College women's lacrosse team saw their five game winning streak snapped Saturday evening as they dropped a tight 10-6 decision to Chapman University.
Whittier who came into the contest with a 5-0 record against non-conference opponents including St. Joseph's, North Central, Albion, DePauw, and Southwestern was averaging 14.4 goals per game during this span but was held to just six goals against a tough Panther defensive unit.
CU struck first three minutes in but saw Daniella Delledera and Taylor Pool add back to back goals to put the Poets in front 2-1. But the turning point in the game came during a 22-minute stretch when Chapman turned this early deficit into a 5-2 lead, scoring four straight until the Purple & Gold would add their third from Lily Baxter with 1:28 to play despite being a man down moving the score to 5-3 at the break.
Baxter would squeeze in her second goal of the game between two Panther goals to start off the second period. The Poets would add another within a two minute span from Rebekah Delledera and Haley Kleine that pulled WC within one 7-6 but that would be the last time Whittier would find the back of the goal as Chapman would add the final three scores of the game to hold on for the four goal victory.
Nicole Yorba between the posts collected nine saves against 19 shots, while Kara Podesta for Chapman finished with six.
Baxter led the offense with two goals on six shots and an assist. She also had three draw controls and a caused turnover.
Whittier returns home this Wednesday, April 9 as they host Pomona-Pitzer at 7:00pm before hosting Redlands on Saturday, April 12 at 11:00am.
