2007 Women's Soccer Preview

The Whittier College women's soccer program is just four years removed from the SCIAC Championship season of 2003, but the Poets have struggled since then.

The team is now under the direction of its third head coach in as many seasons.  Nicole Gervais, a stand-out soccer player at Principia College and a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Hall of Famer, comes to Whittier to rebuild Poets women's soccer.  Coming from the strong program in Southern Illinois, Gervais is hoping to turn the program around with the help and hard work of the dedicated players that will be part of the 2007 campaign.

With only six returning players, the team has brought on several players from around campus and some key recruits bringing the roster to the size of 17.  Three key returners for the Poets are this year's tri-captains, Ashley Phipps '10, Brittany Kunz '10 and Alex Guevara '09.  Freshmen Ameshia Hamlet and Aly Romeo headline the newcomers, with five other freshman in the mix to make an immediate impact.

The Poets begin their season with three non-conference games, starting on August 31 at home against Principia.  The 12-game SCIAC schedule begins on Sept. 12 against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
