Women's Soccer Blanked by San Diego Christian, Aceves '10 Makes 16 Saves


Lowhren Aceves '10 made a career-high 16 saves in goal for Whittier College, but the Poets women's soccer team lost 10-0 at home to non-conference opponent San Diego Christian College on September 8th.

San Diego Christian scored early and often, putting seven goals on the scoreboard in the first half.  The opened the scoring in the 2nd minute, as Mary Willis found the back of the net after a teammate's shot rebounded off of Aceves.  The Hawks' Shannon Gibson tallied the second goal of the day in the 21st minute.  They continued to pour it on later in the first half as Amy Gleason scored three straight in the 27th, 33rd and 34th minutes to give the Hawks a 6-0 lead.  They added one more before the half on an Araceli Velasquez goal in the 39th minute.  The Hawks out shot the Poets 26-0 in the first half.

San Diego Christian continued the scoring in the second half in the 50th minute when Willis scored for the second time on the day.  Melissa Musicha added another in the 59th minute and Samantha Beveridge capped the scoring in the 87th minute to complete the 10-0 victory.

The Poets begin conference play on September 12th, when they take on visiting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 7pm.
