Women's Soccer Drops SCIAC Opener

The Poets women's soccer team began play in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 9-0 loss to visiting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on September 12.  With the loss, the Poets fall to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in SCIAC play.

It took Claremont nearly a half hour to break through on the scoreboard despite a barrage of shots early on.  Whittier goalkeeper Lowhren Aceves '10 made a number of great saves and got some help from her defense in the opening minutes.  In the 27th minute, however, the Athenas broke through with a goal by Ashley Green and opened the proverbial floodgates.  Nicole Sady-Kennedy netted Claremont's second goal in the 38th minute, and Meredith Doyle and Gizelle Pera followed suit in the 39th and 40th minutes, respectively.  The Athenas held a 22-0 advantage in first half shots en route to a 4-0 lead at the break.

In the second half, Claremont continued to pressure the Poets defense and added to their lead with a pair of goals in a twenty second span from Sara McKinney in the 54th minute.  Katherine Jarvis scored back-to-back goals of her own in the 56th and 60th minutes.  Laura Hagen put on the finishing touch in the 74th minute to give Claremont the 9-0 win.  The Athenas finished the game with 33 shots, 19 of which were on goal.  Aceves made ten saves for the Poets.

Whittier continues SCIAC play this weekend, when they travel to California Lutheran University for their first road game of the season on September 15.  The 2pm game starts a four game road trip for the Poets.
