Women's Soccer Loses a Pair in SCIAC Play

Whittier College Women's Soccer lost two SCIAC games this past week.  Their first loss came at the hands of Occidental College, who beat the Poets 4-0 on October 11.  The poets then traveled to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps where they suffered a 6-1 loss on October 15.  Whittier remains winless on the season at 0-12 overall and 0-8 in SCIAC play.

Against Occidental, the Poets gave up just one first half goal.  It came in the 27th minute when a shot from long distance drifted over the head of Whittier goalkeeper Lea Betsworth '12.  It wasn't until the 53rd minute of the second half that the Tigers would get their second goal of the day.  They added insurance in the 63rd and 85th minutes to take home the 4-0 victory.

The Poets out shot Occidental in the second half, taking six shots in the half to the Tigers' four.  Overall Occidental held a 12-7 edge in shots.  Betsworth made three saves in goal for the Poets.

Whittier played their next game on the road versus Claremont.  After 30 minutes of scoreless action, the Athenas got on the board with a goal from Laura Hager.  It opened the floodgates, as they scored three more before the halftime whistle to take a 4-0 lead at the break.

The Poet defense got stronger in the second half, but allowed another goal in the 54th minute by Ashley Green.  The Poets ruined the Claremont clean sheet in the 82nd minute when Hannah Cooley '12 found the back of the net with Stephanie Bergstrom '12 getting credit for the assist.  Claremont added one more a minute later to finish the 6-1 victory.

The Poets travel to California Lutheran on October 18.  Kick off is scheduled for 11:00am.
