Poets fall to Pomona-Pitzer in conference game


WHITTIER, Calif. - The Whittier College women's soccer team dropped its fourth straight game on Wednesday evening, 4-0, to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Pomona-Pitzer at the Graham Soccer Field.

The Poets (2-9-2, 0-7-1 SCIAC) allowed three first half goals and were outshot 7-3 but buckled down in the second half and held the Sagehens scoreless for the final 44:37 of the game.

Whittier held an 8-4 advantage on shots in the second half and earned two corners kicks to Pomona's one for the game.

Gina-Marie DiPierro started in goal and made two saves. She was relieved by Lea Betsworth in the second half who made three saves.

Chelsea Irha had three shots which includes a team-high two on goal. Stephanie Bergstrom and Zoe Peirce each added a shot on goal.

Pomona (3-8-1, 2-4-1 SCIAC) scored its first goal at the 7:11 mark off a free kick from Jordan Bryant. Katy Metcalf added the goals two and three in the 12th and 25th minute, respectively. The final goal came just 23 seconds into the second half from Katie Kerr.

The Poets return to action on Saturday, October 17, as they hit the road to face La Verne at 11 am.
