WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College women's soccer team continued their home stretch as they fell to the cougars of Cal State San Marcos 3-0 Saturday afternoon.
The Poets (0-3) were seeking their first win on the season but they were without senior captain Shelly Johiro who was out with a foot injury and sophomore midfielder Danielle Kwasniowski who is unable to play due to a concussion she suffered against Biola University. With these players out, the purple and gold had to shift their lineup around as senior Megan Wessel started at forward, while freshman Madison Shipherd got her first start of the season in the midfield.
Even with these changes the Whittier women's soccer team was unable to stop the aggressive play and quickness of the Cougars. In the 16th minute of the first half, Shelby Bush took a shot from 15 yards out as she put San Marcos up 1-0. But that's all they would manage as they went into the half leading 1-0.
As the second half got underway, Shipherd continued to be locked down as the Cougar defense made sure she only got two shots off the entire game. Bush ended up getting her second goal of the game off of a stolen ball that was lost by the Poet defenders. That put San Marcos up 2-0 and gave them a lead they would not relinquish.
In the final minutes of the game, Kelly Skvarna of San Marcos got a goal of her own as she slid a ball past a diving Shanna Falch that put the Cougars up 3-0. For the game, San Marcos finished with four corner kicks to Whittier's two but Falch ended the game with six saves.
The Poets return to the field as they have yet another home game as they open up SCIAC play against the University of La Verne Leopards Wednesday, September 14 beginning at 7pm.
