WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College women's soccer team saw Redlands add three second half goals in route to a 3-1 victory Wednesday evening at the Donald E. Graham Soccer Field.
Whittier now drops their third straight SCIAC contest and now move to 4-7, 2-5 SCIAC, while Redlands improves to 6-1-2, 5-1-1 SCIAC.
The Purple & Gold started off strongly playing to a scoreless first half despite being outshot 7-3 but saw the damage done early in the second when Kristin Arroyo one timed a ball from the top of the box after receiving a through ball from Savannah Laursen.
"In the first half we came out aggressive and was organized defensively, which allowed for more numbers around the ball, which ultimately led to more offense, and calm and composed passing," explained Head Coach Monica Gerardo.
This put Redlands in front 1-0 but it was soon added to in the 84th and 86th minutes from Devin Wright and Laursen. Wright tapped in a ball in the box that was played in by Laursen off of a free kick and then two minutes later Laursen connected off of a loose ball in front of the goal, which put Redlands in front 3-0.
But Whittier didn't go away and took 11 shots in the second and continued to play aggressively on both sides of the ball and it paid off in the 88th minute when sophomore Allison Calabrese connected on her third goal of the season when she volleyed the ball with her right foot to the far post after the ball was bouncing around inside of the box.
This goal pulled the Poets within two with eight minutes to play but they were unable to get another clean look at goal as Redlands held on for the two goal victory.
"We need to be able to finish with the opportunities we get. Good teams are able to regroup and come out stronger in the second half and our team needs to do a better job dealing with that pressure," explained Gerardo.
Whittier continues with SCIAC play and opens up a three game road trip as they travel to Chapman University on Saturday, October 6 with game time slated to begin at 11:00am.
