WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Soccer team remains hot as they put up their first shutout on the season beating Soka University 3-0 at Memorial Stadium.
Over the past two games, the Purple & Gold have held their opponents to just one goal and a combined 11 shots. After a 5-1 victory over Emerson to open up 2017, the Poets followed with a 3-0 win over Soka improving to 2-0 on the young season.
Whittier struck quickly for the second straight game with freshman Jazmin Gomez (Norwalk, Calif.) notching her second goal of her career in the 4th minute of play after receiving a cross from Andrea Aldama (Gardena, Calif.).
This would be the lone goal scored in the first half despite pouring on seven shots. In the second, the Poets continued their pressure but this time added another 18 shots with two finding the back of the net.
Clarissa Field (Whittier, Calif.) received a pass from outside the box and launched a shot from long range that just snuck under the crossbar giving WC a 2-0 lead. The final tally came at the 69:36 mark from Leah Kolek (Diamond Bar, Calif.) who capitalized on a take down in the box to connect on the PK and her third goal of the season.
The Poets outshot the Lions 25-5 for the game and held the advantage 9-0 on corner kicks. Stella Thermos (Seal Beach, Calif.) picked up her second win in between the posts as she added two saves in her first shutout of her career.
Whittier wraps up their non-conference schedule this weekend on Saturday, September 9 as they travel to take on Providence Christian College with game time set for 4:30pm.
