WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Soccer team came back from a 1-0 deficit Wednesday evening to top the Occidental College Tigers 2-1 in their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opener.
It was a slow start for the Poets as they got off five shots in the first half, while seeing themselves trail for the first time all season at 1-0 at the break. The connection for Oxy came at the 6:41 mark from Katherine Kim, but that would be the last offense generated by the Tigers as the defensive unit for WC locked in the rest of the game limiting Oxy to just four shots.
In the second half, Whittier came out and added another five shots with two finding the back of the goal. The equalizer came at the 62:52 mark from junior Miranda Yzabal (Whittier, Calif.) who received a nice ball from Lauren Kai (Torrance, Calif.). Yzabal now has three goals in two games.
The go ahead goal came on the Poets next possession this time from freshman Jazmin Gomez (Norwalk, Calif.) who received a 1-2 from Leah Kolek (Diamond Bar, Calif.) and Kai that gave WC a 2-1 lead, which they would hold.
Stella Thermos (Seal Beach, Calif.) picked up yet another win between the posts finishing with three saves. Both Whittier and Occidental finished tied on shots at 10-10 but WC held the advantage on corner kicks at 4-2.
Whittier returns home this Saturday, September 16 as they host the Uni. of Redlands beginning at 7:00pm.
