WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Soccer team suffered their first loss of 2018 Saturday night as they fell 2-0 to Occidental College at Memorial Stadium.
Two goals within three minutes of each other in the first half proved crucial in the victory for Oxy. Katherin Kim scored the first on a header in the box back post coming off a corner in the 26th minute. Layla Devlin then answered in the 29th minute scoring on a breakaway ending with a shot corner post.
The two goals are the most Whittier has given up in a single game this season as they have held four teams to just three combined tallies.
Whittier totaled 14 shots for the game with two corner kicks. Miranda Yzabal (Whittier, Calif.) led the offense with four shots, three being on goal, while Kanoe Morihara (Mililani, HI) and Aubrey Baran (La Mirada, Calif.) would tack on two apiece.
In goal, Stella Thermos (Seal Beach, Calif.) picked up the loss playing the first half giving up the two goals, while registering six saves. Freshman Vanessa Martinez (La Mirada, Calif.) replaced her in the second half and held the Tigers scoreless, while tallying seven saves.
Whittier travels for two games this week as they take on Caltech this Wednesday, September 12 beginning at 4:00pm before going to the University of La Verne this Saturday, September 15 with game time set for 7:00pm.
