Poets put up fight with Redlands

REDLANDS, Calif. –  The Whittier College Women's Swimming & Diving team welcomed back Senior Maddie McMurrary (Phnom Penh, Cambodia) this past weekend when they took on the Bulldogs of the University of Redlands, falling 137-89. 

The Poets would start out strong with the 400 Medley Relay team of Lexi Mauldin (Modesto, Calif.), Alexa Melara (Rialto, Calif.), Esther Choe (Mercer Island, WA), and Brooke Geske (San Pedro, Calif.) finishing ahead of both Redland's relays for 1st with a 4:07.75.

In the distance events, Allie Novak (Duarte, Calif.) would keep the momentum going, winning the 1650 Free with a season best 19:36.12 and followed closely by McMurray in 3rd at a 20:28.49. Novak would wrap up her events by later finishing 4th in the 500 Free (5:48.38).

Earning points in the remaining Freestyle heats, Junior Brenda Shanahan (San Ramona, Calif.) would touch 2nd in the 100 (55.72) and 200 (2:05.11). Geske would also come in 2nd in the 50 Free at a 25.09 with Sophomore, Victoria Unger (Granite Bay, Calif.) finishing in 5th (29.07) behind her. To round off her day, Geske finished 1st in the 200 Back, going a 2:13.40.

To add other top finishes for the day, Melara would swim a 2:14.28 in the 200 IM for 1st place, followed by Senior Kayanna Heffner (Bend, OR) in 4th (2:20.53). The pair would also finish in the same places in the 200 Breast, going 2:27.97 and 2:36.62 respectively. Choe would also touch a tenth of a second behind Heffner for 5th at a 2:36.75.

Wrapping up the individual events, Choe and Unger would go 4-5 in the 200 Fly and the 200 Free Relay of Shanahan, Seniors Erika Ngo (Alhambra, Calif.), Leimana Hassett,(Lahaina, HI) and Heffner would touch 3rd.  

Whittier will send off their seniors this Saturday, February 10th with their last home meet of the season. Diving starts at 10:30 AM with senior recognition to follow.
