Poets drop season opener to Pomona, fall to CMS too
WHITTIER, Calif. - The Whittier College women's tennis team opened its season this past weekend with a pair of matches against Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rivals Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
The Poets (0-2, 0-2 SCIAC) lost both matches 9-0 but not before they played in some competitive matches.
On Friday Katie Davidson lost at No. 6 singles 6-1, 6-3. She was the only Poet to steal at least one game in each set against her opponent. She was also one of three Poets to win one game against her opponent.
The others were Kady Oliker at No. 1 singles (0-6, 1-6) and Rachel Aelion-Moss at No. 2 singles (2-6, 0-6).
On Saturday the Poets hosted the Athenas and showed considerable improvement. The No. 1 doubles team of Aelion-Moss and Oliker lost 8-3 as they were the only doubles team to win a game for the purple and gold.
On the singles side Oliker fell 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles while Aelion-Moss lost 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.
At No. 4 singles Maryrose Vigorita lost 6-2, 6-1 and Davidson lost 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Hannah Whitehurst won a team-high four games at No. 6 singles. She lost 6-0, 6-4.
The Poets return to action on Friday, February 27, as they host Biola University at 2:30 p.m.
