WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College women's tennis team used strong doubles performances and strong serving in singles to cruise to the 8-1 victory over the Beavers of the California Institute of Technology Saturday morning.
Whittier now improves to 8-6, 2-2 SCIAC play while Caltech drops to 3-6, 0-6 SCIAC.
The Poets have now won their second straight SCIAC contest after beating the Tigers of Occidental College yesterday afternoon and look forward to a much needed week of rest before taking on Cal Lutheran and No. 27 Redlands next Friday, April 13 and Saturday, April 14, with matches slated to begin at 2pm and 10am, each respectively.
Whittier jumped out in front after doubles 3-0 despite having close matches at No.2 and No. 3 where Whittier held a 5-4 advantage in both matches before pulling away late to win 8-4 at both positions.
With freshman Benay Weintraub having to miss the match due to a class conflict Lauren Gelgur stepped in for her at No. 3 doubles for the first time this season pairing up with senior Kady Oliker and they didn't skip a beat as they cruised to the 8-4 win.
In singles play sophomore Chloe Dredge continues to impress as she wins her second straight match at No. 2 winning 6-0, 6-0 improving her record to 9-5 on the season.
Gelgur also filled in for Weintraub in singles play and continues her hot streak winning her seventh straight match improving her record to 7-4.
Freshman Rachel Sugiyama who has been rock solid in doubles play this season also impressed in singles play as she won at No. 6 6-2, 6-1 to move her record to 6-3.
