Volleyball Dominates La Sierra in First Win of the Season

finished with a match-high 17 kills to lead the Whittier College volleyball team to a 30-17, 30-18, 30-13 victory over La Sierra University on September 13.  It is the first win for the Poets this season (1-5) and comes in their last non-conference match before the start of SCIAC play.

McMillen continues to lead the Poets attack; she now has 82 kills on the season and averages 4.32 kills per game.  Victoria Larios '11 was credited with 14 assists and Christa Rainville '08 had nine.  Defensively, the Poets were led by Jennifer Salas'10, who had a match-high 19 digs and Melissa Johnson '10 who had three blocks.  Jessica Schlegel '08 pitched in with eight digs and Deena Arenas '08 and Larios had seven apiece. 

La Sierra got eleven kills from Chelsea Johnson and seven from Hallie Burishkin.  Leila Abufarie handed out 16 assists.  Two Golden Eagles finished with double-digit digs: Burishkin had 16, while Veronica Felix ended up with eleven.

The Poets are in action again on September 18 as they open up SCIAC play against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.  The match begins at 7:30pm in the Graham Athletics Center.
